Where Can I Find Out More About Aphasia?

June is Aphasia Awareness Month. In December I attended the convention for the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) in Seattle.  I love watching documentaries and was thrilled to attend a session where a panel from Boston University spoke about creating the documentary, “What is Aphasia?”  The story behind its creation is a documentary all in itself–during the pandemic, Boston Professor Dr. Elizabeth Hoover needed to come up with a creative way to teach people about Aphasia.  She decided a documentary would be a powerful and effective way to do it.  She gathered colleagues and the talented Midnight Bunch (shown above with me and my husband) production company and they went to work.
The series is divided into 5 chapters:
1) What is Aphasia?
2) The First Few Days
3) Living with Aphasia
4) The Psychological Impact
5) The Care Partner Perspective
The documentary contains interviews of stroke survivors and their care partners from all walks of life, and with a variety of severities. If you are wanting to know more about aphasia, this is a great place to start.
