There are many techniques speech therapists are trained in to help an individual improve swallowing function, starting with a thorough assessment. This may be an instrumental evaluation, using X-ray technology (modified barium swallow study) or with an endoscope that is passed through the nose (a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, or FEES).
Once a swallow impairment has been diagnosed, a powerful treatment to expedite rehabilitation may be appropriate. VitalStim is an FDA-approved swallowing intervention in which electrodes are placed on the neck and/or cheeks to stimulate nerves and muscles. This modality is safe and effective and, when paired with traditional swallow muscle exercises, is usually covered by insurance.
The training and equipment required for VitalStim are expensive; thus, this intervention is not offered by most clinics. Live Well Speech Therapy has the latest equipment, complete with biofeedback so clients can visually work toward targets. We proudly offer this powerful treatment to clients with swallow impairment at no extra charge.
