I learned from the fabulous Dr. Christine Sapienza as she trained a group of Speech Language Pathologists in Salt Lake City in Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST). Expiration is critical for our most basic functions–breath support for functional speech, respiratory coordination for breathing, strong muscles for a productive cough, and robust lungs to clear the airway when necessary.
There are few individuals receiving speech and/or swallow therapy who would not benefit from Expiratory Muscle Strength Training. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies have found it to be useful in dysphagia (swallow impairment), dysarthria (weak speech musculature), cognitive function, weak cough, and voice. I am especially appreciative of the research that has demonstrated EMST’s benefits in Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Strokes, and Multiple Sclerosis. And while no direct link has been established between expiratory muscle strength training and dementia, research shows that muscle strength and cognition are closely related.
