The American Speech and Hearing Association honors pioneers in our field during Black History Month. It is fitting that our current president, Dr. Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke brings to her office a wealth of personal experience navigating various settings and experiences, including academia, healthcare, and schools. It was exciting to see the energy she brought at our recent convention in Seattle!
Shout-out to my colleagues who continue to break barriers in a predominantly white profession. I’m so fortunate to have learned from many of them. I always get a pick-me-up listening to Speech Tea, a podcast highlighting issues in the field of speech pathology pertaining to the black community. I’ve enlisted the services of one of the hosts, Lauren Hastings, to help me navigate the ropes of billing, which has led to a reduction of approximately 1000% of my stress. 🙂 Additionally, I recently completed an informative insurance billing class from the fabulous entrepreneur Adrienne Fuller, author and owner of a huge speech therapy clinic in Florida. And one of the first books I read about how to start my own practice was coauthored by Adrienne Wallace.
The future is bright!
